Youth In The World Today: Translating Global Experience Into Action
Location: Laguardia Community College , New York
Date: July 26, 2007
On
Thursday, July 26th, SWA conducted a workshop entitled
"Making Student Voices Count in the Global Arena"
for the conference "Relate, Create, Innovate:
Youth in the World." Sponsored by Americans for
Informed Democracy, LaGuardia Community College and
the School for International Training, the day of
speakers and workshops aimed to guide students through
ways to translate their international experiences
into meaningful action. SWA's Advocacy Coordinator
Hannah Dunphy challenged workshop participants to
consider the unique position of youth in the world
today, and to consider their role as a change-maker
in the world as a student. Through a focus on human
trafficking, the interactive workshop engaged students
in strategizing ways in which to connect trafficking
in multiple ways to other important global issues,
and demonstrated ways in which SWA supported international
student action to combat trafficking.

Our
Democratic Philosophy
The Student World Assembly believes that true global democracy affirms fundamental human rights, which include the dignity and worth of all human beings, the equal rights of men and women, social, economic and cultural justice for every person, and the freedom to promote these causes. SWA's representative democracy offers a powerful instrument for addressing the vital social and political conditions that threaten our global future. The informed wishes of the people, conveyed through the collective of a democratic assembly, need to be heard in the decision-making processes. By giving students from the most remote to the more accessible institutions an equal voice, we are enabling all students to educate, participate and take action, and to begin thinking of themselves as global citizens.
