Vote for Your Candidates!
 Elect 2007-2008 SWA International Officers!

It is that time of year again, time to vote for the candidates that you feel are best suited to fill the roles of Assembly Speaker and Assembly Vice-Speaker! These officers will oversee all international committee activities during their 2007-2008 tenure in office. As a reminder, the Assembly Speaker will be the candidate that receives the greatest number of votes while the candidate with the second-highest vote will be considered the Assembly Vice-Speaker.

Duties of the Assembly Speaker include representing the face of SWA in the media; providing leadership and guidance to the International Committees as well as serving as a liaison between the Execute Director and the International Committees; and presiding over the SWA International Convention in 2008. The Assembly Vice-Speaker will provide support to the Assembly Speaker and take over the duties of the Speaker if, for any reason, the Speaker is unable to fulfill his/her duties.

This year we have 12 interesting candidates from various parts of the globe - from Nigeria to Ghana to Nepal to the United Kingdom. The list consists of two women and ten men, all of whom have many diverse skills and a vast amount of experience in leadership positions. SWA is proud to welcome our candidates, and are excited to once again have such well-equipped candidates participating in our electoral process.

We look forward to welcoming our new officers so make sure to get out your vote!

Human Trafficking: What Can Students do?
High School for Global Citizenship, New York

On January 23-24, 2007, the SWA held its inaugural event on the 2007 International Convention and Campaign Issue of Human Trafficking: “Human Trafficking: What Can Students Do?” at the High School for Global Citizenship in Brooklyn, New York.   This two-day program, sponsored by the Student World Assembly, was created upon request of the High School for Global Citizenship administration specifically to educate the incoming freshman on this most pressing issue.

The purpose of the event was to give students an overview of human trafficking, in order to better understand the different forms of human rights abuses taking place, and to provide students with the practical tools to spearhead efforts to combat this cruelty. SWA offered workshops and lectures on leadership, human trafficking, human rights, and what students, specifically, can do to prevent trafficking. ECPAT-USA (End Child Prostitution, Child Trafficking, and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes) gave a lecture which provided insight into the problem of trafficking children, and GEMS, an organization that works to empower young women who have been abused by providing empathetic, consistent support and opportunities to make positive changes in their lives, spoke about trafficking and sexual violence, followed by a workshop on how to prevent these human rights violations. Finally, the Polaris Project presented an overview of the problem of human trafficking in the United States region alone.

Student World Assembly would like to thank the High School for Global Citizenship for hosting, and would also like to thank ECPAT-USA, GEMS, and the Polaris Project for participating in such an important educational experience. Congratulations to the SWA-NY members on a very successful event!

Building a Win-Win World: Life Beyond Economic Warfare

If you are interested in new ideas that move beyond the conventional economic theories of development, economist Hazel Henderson is ready to show you how. In Building a Win-Win World: Life Beyond Economic Warfare, Henderson examines how jobs, education, health care, human rights, democratic participation, socially responsible business, and environmental protection are all sacrificed to "global competitiveness." She talks about the diminishing power of the old economic paradigm and outlines a new economic paradigm based on cooperative, sustainable systems.

Publishers Weekly called Henderson’s new book “A thoughtful handbook for planetary citizens and policy-makers…” and Harlan Cleveland, President of the World Academy of Art and Science, a coalition of scientists and intellectuals, wrote that Hazel Henderson’s book's “lucid and vigorous analysis points to a creative and hopeful future, in which cooperation becomes the most dynamic force in the world economy.”

Our Mission

The Student World Assembly is a
non-governmental, nonpartisan organization created to represent students globally. It provides a deliberative assembly where students around the world can exchange views, vote on global issues through online discussion forums and in annual international conventions, and translate these views into meaningful actions.
Our Democratic Philosophy

The Student World Assembly believes that true global democracy affirms fundamental human rights, which include the dignity and worth of all human beings, the equal rights of men and women, social, economic and cultural justice for every person, and the freedom to promote these causes. SWA's representative democracy offers a powerful instrument for addressing the vital social and political conditions that threaten our global future. The informed wishes of the people, conveyed through the collective of a democratic assembly, need to be heard in the decision-making processes. By giving students from the most remote to the more accessible institutions an equal voice, we are enabling all students to educate, participate and take action , and to begin thinking of themselves as global citizens.
