Global Civic Education
& Engagement Initiative

In the recent weeks, the SWA and the Salzburg Seminar conducted preliminary discussions on ways the two organizations can work together. As a result, a new Global Civic Education and Engagement Initiative is being formulated which would combine the SWA’s global outreach with Salzburg Seminar’s intellectual focus and drive.

The Salzburg Seminar is one Europe’s premier think tanks which brings together current and future leaders in order to formulate solutions to global challenges. The Salzburg Seminar brings together scholars, academics, and students from around the world throughout the year in multiple Seminar settings which deal with specific topics such as the role of women in society, the impact of higher education, and changing dynamics of the global economy.

The Seminar’s focus on multiple global issues and its informative method of raising awareness make it an ideal organization with which the SWA can collaborate.

The SWA is currently organizing this collaboration and we will keep you updated as more information and details on the Global Civic Education and Engagement Initiative effort becomes available.

America At the Crossroads

Francis Francis Fukuyama’s new book is an interesting analysis of U.S foreign policy under the Bush administration by a former neoconservative thinker closely associated with key members both within and outside the Bush White House.

Fukuyama begins with a clear history of the neoconservative movement and the different ways it has impacted American policy making in the past couple of decades. He then highlights ways the current American administration has misplaced objectives and how it has undermined the U.S image by making pre-emptive military action a central tenet of U.S action. By breaking away from the current trend of neoconservative thinking, Fukuyama presents a new way forward for the United States as it continues its democracy spreading campaign in Iraq and its global war on terror. The book is a very interesting read and provides a new window through which future American foreign policy can be judged and understood.

Our Mission

The Student World Assembly is a
non-governmental, nonpartisan organization created to represent students globally. It provides a deliberative assembly where students around the world can exchange views, vote on global issues through online discussion forums and in annual international conventions, and translate these views into meaningful actions.
Our Democratic Philosophy

The Student World Assembly believes that true global democracy affirms fundamental human rights, which include the dignity and worth of all human beings, the equal rights of men and women, social, economic and cultural justice for every person, and the freedom to promote these causes. SWA's representative democracy offers a powerful instrument for addressing the vital social and political conditions that threaten our global future. The informed wishes of the people, conveyed through the collective of a democratic assembly, need to be heard in the decision-making processes. By giving students from the most remote to the more accessible institutions an equal voice, we are enabling all students to educate, participate and take action , and to begin thinking of themselves as global citizens.
