SWA-Nigeria Tri-Games , Nigeria

Student World Assembly Nigeria has had a wonderful event called the Tri-Games, at which members of SWA, Obafemi Awolowo University students and members of Organization of African Unity played basketball, handball and table tennis in a friendly competition.

The Tri-Games formation was inspired by a desire to promote unity and solidarity among African nations in order to insure the progress of Africa through peaceful and positive cooperation, as well as the protection and promotion of human rights and independent rule for the nations of Africa. It is great that SWA was able to bring together students from different organizations with similar ideals in a social, albeit competitive, occasion.

The Tri-Games were a closed competition and it was held at the nearby Universal College of Technology.

In the basketball and handball event they had four teams each, and they were named the Campus Team, Town Team, Quarters Team, and Squatters Team, taking there names after the various students hostels. The basketball event, which was very explosive, saw the Campus coming in first place, the Squatters in second, and the Town team coming in third. The Handball event saw the Quarters coming in first place, the Town team in second, and Squatters team in third place. The Table Tennis was played by individuals instead of teams, and the winners were Chinelo Echetabu in first and Folake I. won second in the Women’s tournament, while Shina A. and Groge E. came first and second respectively in the Men’s tournament.

The SWA International would like to congratulate SWA-Nigeria on a successful event at which students with similar goals were brought together to have fun and, hopefully, exchange ideas. What a great example for the rest of us to follow!

Serving Our Fellow Man
Lagos State University Chapter, Nigeria

Student World Assembly would like to commend its Lagos State University Chapter on their successful event, “Empowering the Youth in a Depressed Nigerian Economy”. The three-day event, running from the 9th – 11th August, located at the school's Ojo campus of Lagos State University.

This program was co-sponsored with the Lagos State university Student Union Government and had in attendance special dignitaries Mr. Gbenga Sesan of Omatek Computers; Early Judith, the general coordinator of Humanist Movement International; Barrister Titi Akosa; and Mr Ayodele Adewale of Pronaco. These kind dignitaries gave presentations for the student body which discussed such things as ways to accomplish great achievements and advise on how to manage their lives while on campus. Music was also included with Comrade Ayo Adewale, the ex- president of Lagos State University, gave the attendees a rendition of "Aluta" songs.

The program of events ended with Charles Akponah providing a thorough introduction of Student World Assembly, which was thrilling to the students present, who were eager to become a part of our efforts to promote the ideals of democracy and human rights. This event reinforces the Lagos State University mission which states that it is determined to be a topnotch institution which pursues “excellence in knowledge through learning and research as well as in character and service to humanity.” Congratulations on your success and keep up the good work!

Pressing Global Issue

Corporate Power: Impact, Influence & Accountability

With the ever expanding global dominance of corporations, it is critical to ensure that their choices do not result in a detrimental impact in the areas of human rights and environment.

The international community must make it clear to the corporate world that they will be held accountable for their policies and procedures, when they impinge on the well being of people or the planet. It is no secret that global corporations have gained increasing political power on a global scale. According to the Corporate Accountability International, an organization that wages campaigns challenging irresponsible and dangerous corporate actions all over the world, some have “grown richer and more powerful than many countries.”

Our Mission
The Student World Assembly is a
non-governmental, nonpartisan organization created to represent students globally. It provides a deliberative assembly where students around the world can exchange views, vote on global issues through online discussion forums and in annual international conventions, and translate these views into meaningful actions.
Our Democratic Philosophy
The Student World Assembly believes that true global democracy affirms fundamental human rights, which include the dignity and worth of all human beings, the equal rights of men and women, social, economic and cultural justice for every person, and the freedom to promote these causes. SWA's representative democracy offers a powerful instrument for addressing the vital social and political conditions that threaten our global future. The informed wishes of the people, conveyed through the collective of a democratic assembly, need to be heard in the decision-making processes. By giving students from the most remote to the more accessible institutions an equal voice, we are enabling all students to educate , participate and take action , and to begin thinking of themselves as global citizens.
