Carlton Coon
Vice President of the American Humanist Association and Former
U.S. Ambassador

Ambassador Coon was
a Foreign Service Officer for over thirty-six years, and served
abroad in many diplomatic assignments. He graduated from Harvard
in 1949 and joined the US Foreign Service that same year. He served
in Germany, Syria, India, Iran (where he was in charge of the
American Consulate in Tabriz), Nepal, and Morocco.
In 1981, after
a tour in Washington during which he was in charge of the State
Department's North African Affairs, he returned to Nepal as the
US Ambassador. In 1985 he retired. Since then he has combined
further travel with scholarly studies and writing. He has written
several books, the most recent being "One Planet, One People,
Beyond 'Us vs. Them'" (Prometheus, 2004). He presently serves
as the Vice President of the American Humanist Association.
