Ambassador Carlton Coon
Vice President of the American Humanist Association and Former U.S. Ambassador
----------------------------------
Ambassador Coon was a Foreign Service Officer for over thirty-six years, and served abroad in many diplomatic assignments. He graduated from Harvard in 1949 and joined the US Foreign Service that same year. He served in Germany, Syria, India, Iran (where he was in charge of the American Consulate in Tabriz), Nepal, and Morocco.

In 1981, after a tour in Washington during which he was in charge of the State Department's North African Affairs, he returned to Nepal as the US Ambassador. In 1985 he retired. Since then he has combined further travel with scholarly studies and writing. He has written several books, the most recent being "One Planet, One People, Beyond 'Us vs. Them'" (Prometheus, 2004). He presently serves as the Vice President of the American Humanist Association.
